As with most things there are a number of issues that need to be considered before you finally choose your new bamboo floor. The following points can be easily overlooked before the purchase decision is made.
Bamboo Manufacturing process
Cold pressed or heat pressed (much stronger bond less likely to delaminate). Age of poles used - the Bamboo poles grow to full height in the first growing season, however you need to give the poles at least five years to allow the density of the Bamboo to reach a point that will give you a hardness required for flooring.
Lamination process
Are your boards cross (below left) or vertically laminated (below right) for maximum stability or have they used the much less stable offset laminate? All of the bamboo floor boards are formaldehyde free.
Bamboo Floor Coatings
While most boards will look terrific on display, the coating that is proving the most durable (and comes with a ten year wear warranty) is the Aluminium oxide commercial grade final coating.
Thickness of your boards
Some will say the because the bamboo flooring is just an overlay, it doesn't matter if the boards are a little thinner. However, to get a stable board you need to have sufficient thickness in the boards. The traditional Bamboo floor boards all started as 15mm boards, but manufacturers and retailers in their quest for an “advantage “ have kept reducing the thickness of the boards. Some retailers will offer you 14mm 12mm and even 10mm thick boards, the reduced thickness will impact on the boards stability and resistance to cupping or warping.
Length of bamboo floor boards
The hardest join to visually lose is the end join, to minimize the number of end joins on a floor you try and have as long and wide a board as possible. In a 40 sq m room the number of end joins will increase from 120 to 470 depending on the boards used. Short narrow boards may be cheap, but you will have to live with the significantly higher number of joins for the rest of your time in the house.
Width of boards.
Like the length issue try to get as wide as possible a board. Again it’s easy to think the price is “right” but remember the more joins the greater the chance of gaps.
New Technology Bamboo Floors
Some of the short strand woven boards are manufactured using the 600 tonne presses however the new long wide boards are compressed in a 2000 tonne press - a denser, harder board is the result.
New Click Lock Technology
Can your retailer offer you bamboo flooring with the new glueless click lock boards? These boards are available in horizontal, vertical and the very hard compressed string board.
The click boards allow you the option of self installation, no need for glues and flush fitting joins. Will you have the choice of traditional T&G boards as well as click lock?? Our new single plank wide Click lock boards are flush finished for cleaner lines and are: 190mm wide, 1900mm long and a full 15mm thick.
